I'm not quite sure why we didn't do the whole campfire thing in previous years - maybe because we were still traumatised by our inability to build a successful chimney in the first year - but it was definitely a welcome addition.

Most of us simply grilled steaks or burgers on the fire, although Dan insisted on fashioning an onion hot-plate out of flashing using an angle-grinder so that he had the correct accompaniments to his food. Unfortunately the first attempt didn't even warm the onions, and the second attempt melted the flashing before warming the onions. Poor Dan.
